The 540 was a trick that eluded
me for a long time until I was at my local flying field one
day and to my amazement there was someone else flying a trick
kite and this guy was good. after watching him for a while
I plucked up the courage to go and ask him for a few pointers.
after listening to the guys advice I nailed a respectable
540 on my second attempt.. Bliss..:) this is what he told
me.
Instead of flying the kite straight down
the window, try flying down but at an angle of around 45 degrees
towards the edge of the window. As you feel the kite start
slowing down kill the kite with a pancake movement but, instead
of extending both arms evenly, fully extend outside arm but
only extend the inside arm a little way forward 15 to 30 cm
(6 to 12 inches). This will have the effect of killing the
kite unevenly leaving the inside wing tip cocked towards you
slightly making the rotation easier to achieve.. Pull and
release as described before and again provide slack to aid
tangle free rotation. The kite when rotating may have a tendancy
to slide towards the edge of the window and is technically
a different trick called a Flashback. Once you can do a flat
spin in this way you can start making the dive steeper and
evening up the kill a little until you can do 540's in the
centre of the window.
