The Spine usually lies along the back side of the sail. There is a hole in the sail where the spine and the lower spreader cross to allow them to connect together, with a plastic or metallic T-piece.

The Standoffs connect from the trailing edge of the sail to the lower spreader, using a wide variety of means - every designer has their favourite. The standoffs give the sail its three dimensional depth.
